Soups are not only really easy to make but they can also be a big part in a weight loss program. There is even a Diet that incorporates soups for weight loss! This is because soup is a great filler and researchers have found that soups will keep us fuller for longer compared with other food choices. It makes sense that a bowl of soup will make you feel fuller than a plate of salad. Usually a big bowl of soup will usually be no more than 300 calories.
The thing about soup is that you can put anything you like into it. Most soup bases start with either onions or a combination of vegetables. You can then add a protein source if you want to (chicken is a favorite), some water, salt and pepper and some herbs (fresh or dried) and after about 20 minutes of cooking time, your soup is ready. If you like thicker soups, no problem, just use your blender or, better still your blender stick (sometimes called a hand blender) which is easier and less hassle to wash up. This will thicken your soup nicely without the addition of cream or flour. If you add a potato into your soup, it will not only make the soup creamier but the soup will feel thicker. A tip to make soup thicker is to simply grate a raw potato into the simmering soup for a couple of minutes. One small potato will not make you fat!
You can do some research on the internet and find hundreds of soup recipes. Most people simply do not realize that making soup is really easy. Not quite as easy as opening a can, but certainly fresher and healthier. Soup preparation can take as little as five minutes and then you simply have to wait another fifteen or twenty minutes for the soup to cook and it is ready for delicious consumption!
Here is a list of some great soups for weight loss purposes:
Black bean soup. All you need is to sauté a chopped onion with 4 cloves of minced garlic and 1 tablespoon of cumin. Add 3 to 4 cups of chicken broth (you can either buy this at your local supermarket in a tetra pack or you can pour boiling water onto the onions and garlic mixture and add a stock cube). Now add a couple of chopped tomatoes and a 15 ounce can of black beans and a 1.4 ounce can of diced green chilli peppers. When this comes to a boil, cover and simmer for just five minutes. Add some fresh cilantro if you have it and salt and pepper. This soup is delicious and is guaranteed to make you feel full. The beans will not give your blood a spike and you will enjoy this healthy soup.
Another favorite is Pumpkin soup. Here you can start off sautéing two slices of chopped bacon and one chopped onion. Then drain the fat off and add a 29 ounce can of pumpkin together with 3 ½ cups of chicken broth. All you need now is one cup of apple sauce (with no added sugar) and 2 teaspoons of ginger, salt and pepper. Bring it to the boil and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. You can also add a dollop of sour cream when serving.
Both these recipes are soups for weight loss, take little time to prepare and they are also delicious. Enjoy.
